COOPER COX (b.1978 Sun Valley, ID, lives and works in NY) studied philosophy and sociology at Vanderbilt University. For over 15 years, his creative firm in New York collaborated with well-regarded brands including, Hermès, Tom Ford, and Nike. He took his background in design to pursue a self-taught study of painting through which he immediately felt the affects produced by texture. He was soon invited to exhibit his work in a solo exhibition in New York. He has since been featured in group exhibitions in large cities across the United States. The eyes of the art world have remained captured by his artwork that is consistently finding itself in private collections and public presentations.

Cooper Cox is known for his elaborate painting techniques that create sculptural surfaces. Oil paint itself is a reciprocal participant with the viewer as themes of love, loss, and perception are reflected. The rich detail of not only the medium but the plays with physical and metaphysical perceptions open a multisensory, immersive experience on canvas.

Cox uses detail to present a crispness and at the same time, a rejection of a static, photographic likeness of life. Within these extremes, his work creates a subtle familiarity where we can feel most present and deeply. Hints of humor allow us freedom to examine new questions of human connection. Reality is just palpable enough for a viewer to find new relationships with experiences. Reshaped notions of perception drip into daily life where we express our expanded realities and shared emotions.

Though we are reminded we do not need photographic details to connect with the human condition, Cox employs his photographic memory. Without specific references, he is able to expand his senses to invite us to do the same. We are brought into his methods of reevaluating perspective and balance and extend ourselves into new realms of human connection and social contrast.
